I have some text in a table and I want to add a forced line break. I want to insert a forced line break without having to specify the column width, i.e. something like the following:

When typing < or > in LaTeX and compiling with pdflatex, the less than and greater than symbols appear at upside down exclamation points. I'm not in math mode.

All book figures are set to "here definitely" (as they must come after the text that introduces them). 
Problem 
The list types (enumerated and bullet) have too much space between them. ...

No matter how I try to do it I always get the following error : 
! Package inputenc Error: Unicode char \u8:A^\[DiscretionaryHyphen] not set up for use with LaTeX. 
I have tried using A^\[DiscretionaryHyphen]A^\[DiscretionaryHyphen]A^\[DiscretionaryHyphen]$^{\circ}$, \deg, \textdegree, ...
