Not that big a deal, but why does putting a %-type comment in the same line after \end{comment} cause problems?

Consider this simple alignment (note lack of \hfil in template)

a&b\cr 
aaaaaaaa&bbbbbbbbb\cr 
} 
To my surprise, this does not give Underfull \hbox in alignment error! The ...
