Since the last LaTeX Update, wrapping \document into another environment fails, possibly because of the new hook management system. 
The following used to work:

6.58.1.5 Why are my matrix columns not aligned properly? (Left or right whitespace)

I was surprised to discover that when I create an environment in LaTex, a command of the same name is created. For example:
