It seems I can use $some text in another lang$ instead of (the bigger) \textit{some text in another lang}, may I? 
In my opinion, the effect is the same.

If you in (pdf)latex reference a reference which does not exist (e.g. picture/table/etc), latex will output "??".

I have been using package fontenc with the following invocation, mainly because of what I read here. 
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc} 
But I've noticed that I lose some of the ligatures with the libertine  ...
