I want to write the absolute value of "negative x". When writing $|-x|$, I seem to get excessive spacing: 
Note how there is a lot of space between the vertical bars and the minus sign.

Running pdflatex I get black Clubs/Spades and white Diamonds/Hearts. Though I 
can live with that in my application, I wonder if it is possible to get them

I use spath3 and intersections to split lines that appear to intersect but do not when drawing diagrams. However, I have found that if the lines intersect more than once, something seems to get thrown ...
