This does not compile, which is what I'd expect: \documentclass{amsart} \newcommand{\G2}{G_2} %\DeclareMathOperator{\G2}{G_2} \begin{document} \(\G2\) \end{document} produces ! LaTeX Error: Missing \... [macros] [math-operators] [catcodes]
