How can I make the voltage plus/minus signs bolder? 
The setting circuitikz/voltage/american font=\boldmath works, but it is not bold enough. 
It would be nice if there is something which can be placed ...

8.81.1.5 exit code from lualatex when characters are missing

When pdflatex encounters a character it cannot encode into a font, it dies and produces a non-zero exit code. By contrast, lualatex happily produces an exit code of 0 and simply prints a warning:
