8.66.3.1 Hyphenation issues with latex

I am confused with the alignment of the text. I am not able to reduce space between words so that I can adjust the alignment and give proper hyphenation.

8.66.3.2 What's causing this mirror Lettrine effect?

As you can see in the picture below, I'm getting a strange effect on the righthand page, similar or identical to the lettrine on the left page.
