I'm writing tutorial of TeX and I accidently typed \* and realized the compiler does not read it as an error. I know that adding * triggers \ifstar condition, but I'm curious that how compiler treat \*... [compiling]

If we look at the definitions of \bigl and \bigr, we find \def\bigl{\mathopen\big} \def\bigr{\mathclose\big} In other words, \bigl<bracket> is equivalent to \mathopen\big<bracket>. And ... [brackets] [scaling] [mathtools]
