CLASSICAL PHYSICS 7E, Sum. '03        TEXT: Physics, Serway & Beichner

Physics 7 is a four quarter introductory physics course. The first and second quarter are concerned with classical mechanics, especially momentum, energy, forces, and conservation laws. The third quarter deals with electricity & magnetism. The current (fourth) quarter will deal with fluids, waves and oscillations (generally, and including sound and light), and optics. Much of the material covered will use what you learned in Physics 7A and 7B. Facility with introductory calculus (Math 2A,B) is a prerequisite for the course.

It is recommended that one regularly dedicates no less than two hours of study and homework time per hour of course lecture. Neither procrastination nor massive cramming before exams works in learning physics.     Physics is learned by experimenting and doing lots of homework problems (many more than those listed below).

EXAMS, GRADING, AND HOMEWORK

There will be four homework quizzes, one midterm, and a final exam, all starting at the beginning of class with no time extensions for tardy arrival. The course grade will be determined by 20% from homework quizzes, 35% midterm, and 45% final exam. Exams will be open book, open notes, calculators allowed. Quizzes will be closed book, closed notes, no calculators. Homework assignments (not collected) will be associated with each lecture. Students are expected to do homework in a timely manner and use discussion sections for homework and lecture questions. Solutions will be posted. Quizzes (HQ below) will be comprised of homework problems assigned prior to the quiz.
